If a prominent Democrat politician said ANY of the rabid racist remarks that fpotus, Vance, and the maga's continuously spout, the Times and every other major media would be hounding them to resign and/or never seek office again. They would not call it "rabble-rousing", as if it's a football chant. They would call for the end of that Democrat's career in politics. It is sickening to see media failing to protect our democratic republic from a howling, racist, mob.

And this is one of the many reasons why I cancelled my NYT subscription several months ago.

Good for you! My family still has our online subscription since my wife likes the games and puzzles, but I'm beginning to think we should follow your example...

I gave up the games to appease my soul and conscience. Don't miss it.

I cancelled my digital all content subscription but took a special $25 one for one year games only offer. I am addicted to Spelling Bee, Wordle and Strands. Some criticism is out there towards those of us who don’t completely cancel.

perhaps some will criticize... always. you do what's best for you in your own heart and conscience. agree tough at first to let go.😩

Yeah, because your money supports this "journalism."

"The Times should be better than that."

Yes, they should -- and so should the Post, the Wall Street Journal, and any other mainstream media you'd care to name. But they won't, and there's no indication that they ever will. So let's keep sounding the alarm whenever they show their bias, and maybe they won't be so "mainstream" anymore!

Traveling with Hillbilly says it all...just more of the old "boys on the bus" shite that maybe 30 years ago was justifiable, but with this MAGA crowd? I mean, this is just pretzel-twisting normalization at its most ludicrous and pernicious extreme.

Fuck Hillbilly, and fuck the Times.

Fuck especially Mr. Bender, who trades real reporting for his access to far right Republicans— his career specialty.

I'm happier than ever that I ditched the NYT over a year ago.

Eureka Mr. Froomkin. Had the same reaction, even though I know Bender plays it that way to keep up his credibility among the right wing Republicans he specializes in covering. That’s not reporting, nor investigative work— it’s call toadyism. He’s been captured whether or not he realizes himself, and it’s par for the course for the NYT.

PS, for those who think this sloppy coverage is something new for the NYT, just remind yourself that the NYT was an apologist/denier for the Holocaust.

When Trump and Vance get someone killed because of their racist rhetoric they will deny any connection. The Republican Party will join in lock step to protect them. And the NY Times will help spread their narrative that the killing happened because of the Biden/Harris failure to secure the border.

Their misogyny helped repeal Roe v Wade, and women have died because of it. Does that count?

And if you try to contact Mr. Bender or any of the other sanewashers there, you get crickets at best, or else you get defensive snark which makes you want to go to their office and break things. Legends in their own minds.

I can understand a personality cult lapping up the verbal vomit spewed by Vance and Trump, but the utter moral failure of the news media is disgusting. These guys are the leaders of the descent into the sewers, while the press tells us this is a boisterous version of normal politics.

On the positive side, I'm positive that Trump and Vance have shit the bed and that Karris/Walz will prevail in November.

A recurring problem is that the Times generally writes in an exalted register, which allows the hacks among them to attitudinize in the manner of chums chatting at a cocktail party in the Hamptons.

Thank you for calling out Bender and the NYT yet again. I read that article and wondered if you would choose that one to fix, and hoped you would. Well done!

This reminds me of how Frank Bruni covered Bush in 2000.

“ The Times’ Frank Bruni, or How to Succeed in Journalism Without Really Caring (About Issues)

The newest columnist at The New York Times doesn’t have much to say about substantive issues, writes Eric Alterman.”

If the hateful, lying words out of Vances' mouth are truly acceptable to the NYTs CEO, Board of Directors and Chiefs, editors, then it's good to know where they morally and ethically stand. Cancelled my subscription years ago with their continued, blatant approval of Trump and downplaying Trump's explanations of his many lies and double speak. Wish another million or so would do the same. My opinions. Other outlets such as AP and NPR offer more balanced news and verifiable reporting without the gag factor.

And the suppressed premise in Vance’s leaning so hard on lies about what his constituents are supposed to have said is that *only* those very few constituents would matter, not all the massive numbers of other constituents whom he’s openly attacking and inciting domestic terrorism against.
