Thanks for this, Dan. Your mother was a role model for the science journalists who followed her, and she showed me extraordinary kindness when I lived in DC and asked for advice about how to make it as a freelance writer. She accepted a lunch invitation from me, a younger and basically unknown writer, and offered me attention and respect, something that helped me a lot at the beginning of my own career. I've thought of that lunch often in the years since, and have tried to be as generous as Maya was when young writers ask me for advice now. I'm sorry to hear of her death, but glad to read of her rich, full life.

My sincerest condolences on the passing of your remarkable mom after a long and fruitful life. Thanks for sharing. I can't speak about her other children, but I know at least one for whom she must have been very proud since he followed admirably in her footsteps.

My condolences to you and your family for the loss of your mother. It sounds like she lived a long and happy life filled with her passions.

I’m sure she will be sorely missed, but that her legacy will live on, well established in you and the many others that her life has touched in a positive way.
