eg. CNN reporting on protestors getting brutalized on the hwy by cops on horseback with batons. She was commenting and drawing attention to how terrible it was but then she just HAAAAD to say "I have to say blocking a highway is illegal" as if that justifies what is happening and it fully ignores that the misdemeanor of blocking a highway is being done to block felony evil lawbreaking by ICE/pres/DHS which SCOTUS has clearly called out as being illegal under our constitution, our laws, not to mention international law and the right to claim asylum. SO ICE IS ALSO BREAKING THE LAW AND DOES NOT HAVE THE MORAL HIGH GROUND
CNN would have criticized the men and women taking part in every slave uprising in the US South. "I have to say that slavery is legal -- and these people are the rightful and lawful property of the plantation owners -- and they all should have the proper respect for the law."
Good for the Guardian. I follow them more each day, as well as the CBC, BBC and Substack. Most legacy "journalists" and any controlled by big corporations are no longer trustworthy so I refuse to pay attention to them.
While it's always useful for media critics like Mr. Froomkin to expose the fundamental reactionary biases of the mainstream mass media, I'm beginning to believe that there is no chance that they will change during my lifetime. That makes it all the more important for progressives to support independent journalism like his. Well done, Mr. F!
Totally expected militarization and escalation thereof from Trump.
This is in the Authoritarians' Playbook, which he follows pretty religiously, or at least Steven Miller does. And Noem seems to be a convert to it as well.
Those Marines, though--what General followed that order? Who agreed to put them in?
They have moved from complicity to collaboration. No great surprise. You and the rest of us told them endlessly that Trump was a fascist and that he would do to a free press what fascists always do. Their corporate overlords shrugged their shoulders. And now their goose is cooked. Anyone who expects from American corporate owned legacy media anything other than pablum designed to placate the regime is not living in the real world.
Maybe the Australian reporter who was deliberately targeted and hit by one of those boys with toy guns rubber bullets will be the wake up call for others in the press. First comes the intimidation, then the repression, followed by their organizations being shut down- no jobs, no profits. And if he really hates them they’re probably going to jail or worse. It won’t matter that they both sided with "I have to say blocking a highway is illegal", because nothing mitigates his feelings of grievance and need for revenge. They are probably only days away from these dominoes falling. They could stop this now, later will not work.
24 hr news and commentary will be the death of us. They're need for content and ratings escalates tense situations.
How bout we cover Ukraine? Africa? South America? Asia?
When CNN began Ted Turner brought the news coverage seen across the globe to educate America that the world is a pretty big place with things happening everywhere.
The asswipes in the “legacy” media helped engineer the election outcome. Now they continue to pant after every single GD shiny object he tosses out. Fourth estate my ass.

I don't believe the obedient corporate lackeys deserve to be labeled as journalists. They have forsaken the obligation that the title requires.
Bless you for this.
Thanks Dan!!!!

When you say "journalists," do you mean "editors and publishers?"

I love how the Times always puts “controversial” views in the mouths of others.
