I'm not sure it's "both sides" for everything. When the story is about criticizing Republicans, we need "both sides." When it's about criticizing Dems, we do not. Biden's age got covered ad nauseam. Trump's doddering speeches got barely a blip.

The mainstream “liberal” media will only focus on scandals — and pseudo scandals — that are being promoted by the right. Whitewater, Travelgate, Filegate, Chinagate, Benghazi, HIllary’s emails, the supposed corruption of the Clinton Foundation (a “scandal” created by Steve Bannon pal Peter Schweizer.) In contrast they let GHW Bush get away with lying for several years about his deep involvement in the illegal, unconstitutional Iran Contra conspiracy even after the Independent Counsel’s report made it clear Bush and his rhight hand man Donald Greg had been up to his neck in the Contra operation. The evidence that Dubya had never fulfilled his National Guard service obligations was overwhelming and yet the media played along with the Bush campaign’s dismissal of the evidence as “old news”. The media just pretended that since the National Guard issue had been raised during his run for Texas governor the whole country knew about it and didn’t care.
The failure to send search and rescue to Texas for three days while children drowned is pretty much factually established but they let it go.
Maybe they’re being handed daily doses of Epstein by Elon? Putin? Maybe this is Putin compromat on Trump and he’s outlived his usefulness and malleable unprincipled Vance waits in the wings?
Dan Froomkin is SO right. Coverage of Epstein shows us what the press is capable of, but they just keep whiffing on otger hugely important stories. I always thought it was because the prioritization went Sex > Violence > Race > Religion, but maybe Froomkin is right that fear of bias accusations is still a major reason.
