I am sorry the dinner was stopped before Trump made an ass of himself, but he promised he would do it in another 30 days, so I hope all those sell-outs put on their nice outfits and applaud the naked emperor in a more secure place. I don’t blame Mr. Allen for being so angry, and I am sorry he ruined his life. He is more honest than any of the hypocrites who attended that dinner.
I’m not a journalist, Dan, but I can’t resist weighing in on press issues because of what I’ve been seeing for so many years. That’s why I wrote this piece a couple days ago.
As journalists are being killed (Israel) jailed (Iran, Russia) and otherwise intimidated, shamed and bullied into not holding power to account (USA), there is no way for a self-respecting journalist to rub elbows at this corruption cotillion. Access to a "subject" who lies, dissembles, disrespects and obstructs the press is not access at all -- it is complicity.
I for one will be looking for the list of those who do attend. I will be looking for anyone who is able to speak truth to power in that venue. Perhaps among the creative and bold there will be one or two moments. But, mostly, I will be pursuing those who, all dressed up enabled this madman and his pursuits, so I can be sure to avert my eyeballs and hold onto my coins, never to support them again. At the circus, we all need to be sure we are not one of the acts.
If all the non-FOX News--or its FOX-lite imitators--journalist simultaneously channel Stephen Colbert's WHCA presentation, maybe it will overwhelm the Mentalist, who will suddenly proclaim, "You guys are all feeling horrified that the DC press corps is already 75% Orban-ized."
The people attending are afraid of being fired if they don’t attend. They are rationalizing this, probably the same way some people in the first Trump administration rationalized staying with Trump as guardrails. But a real guardrail now would be for these people to report the truth about Trump. You are right, just showing up at this dinner shows business as usual. It’s a cop-out.
