Why not: "Federal immigration officers may deport immigrants to countries other than their own in as little as six hours, with no assurances that new arrivals will be safe from persecution or torture, a top official said in a memo. The UN says sending immigrants to dangerous countries violates international law." At least get the violation right up front. Ack.

Worth noting that most of the countries under consideration are the worst of the worst BY THE STATE DEPARTMENT'S OWN CLASSIFICATION. All of them are Category 3 or 4, where non-essential US citizens are either strongly discouraged (Cat 3) or forbidden from going or airlifted out of (Cat 4, including South Sudan).

If one part of the US government, the part that handles assessments of foreign countries, does not trust the local government to protect US citizens from random or targeted harm, why isn't anyone connecting that to the assurances given to Homeland Security that no torture or murder will occur?
